Rain

In the silence of the night

it softly begins.

A gentle cleansing at first

and then the steady beats

that lead the steps as

the leaves begin to dance.

In the silence of the night,

through the open window,

the skies cry their gentle song

and the earth holds the tears,

absorbing each drop

until its grasp overflows.

In the silence of the night,

under the warmth of the quilt

and beside the snoring of four-legged companions

the heartbeat of the rain and the breath of the breeze

lull me to sleep.
